UAE names Oza captain for home Asia Cup showdown

The Emirates Cricket Board has handed the UAE T20 squad the keys to 24-year-old Muhammad Waseem for the 2024 Asia Cup. Aku Patel takes the gloves, while Vriitya Aravind and Basil Hameed return from injury.

The 17-man roster blends youth and experience. Waseem, who led the side in the recent T20 World Cup, keeps the armband after Aayan Afzal Khan stepped aside for personal reasons. Patel, 25, will don the gloves after a strong showing in the ACC Premier Cup.

Leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan and all-rounder Hameed, both back from lay-offs, add depth. The squad includes three uncapped players: 19-year-old batter Aryansh Sharma, left-arm seamer Sanchit Sharma, and off-spinner Alishan Sharafu.

Why home advantage changes the game

The UAE last hosted a major ICC event in 2014. This Asia Cup marks the first time the country stages a multi-nation tournament on home soil since the pandemic. Local fans will pack Dubai International Stadium and Sharjah Cricket Stadium, where the UAE has won 62% of its T20 matches since 2020.

Climate poses the biggest challenge. August temperatures in Dubai average 41°C, with humidity topping 70%. The UAE squad has trained in heat chambers at the Zayed Cricket Academy to simulate conditions.

How the UAE stacks up in Group A

The UAE faces Nepal and Pakistan in the group stage. Pakistan, ranked sixth in T20Is, are clear favorites. Nepal, however, have climbed to 15th after beating UAE twice in the ACC Premier Cup final last year.

UAE coach Mudassar Nazar set a semi-final target. “We have the talent to beat any side on our day,” he said. “Home support will be our 12th man.”

What this means for Gulf cricket

The Asia Cup offers the UAE a chance to close the gap with regional heavyweights. Since 2020, the UAE has won 28 of 47 T20 matches, but only three against Full Member nations. Success here could fast-track their push for Test status.

Local leagues stand to gain too. The Emirates D10 and UAE T20 League have produced 12 of the 17 squad members. More exposure on home soil could attract sponsors and young Emiratis to the sport.
